Repairing a plywood Patch in a hardwood floor

About the Patch

Throughout the years we have seen more than our fair share of these. The dreaded plywood patch that seems to plague most of the old hardwood floors in Milwaukee, WI.

Plywood patch seen in many hardwood floors in Milwaukee, WI

The plywood patch in a hardwood floor is typically there for one of two reasons; One being the weekend warrior repair. The other being a cheap and easy way to level a floor for the subsequent installation of carpeting or other floor covering. Regardless of the reason, the unsightly patch would deminish the beauty of the soon to be refinished floors, and needs to be repaired.

An Easy Reapair?

At first thought this may seem like an easy repair; Remove the plywood, install some new wood and call it a day. The problem with this is, if you were only to remove the plywood and install new hardwood in its place you end up with... a nicer looking patch.

In the pictured scenario we would end up with about 4 feet of endjoints aligning perfectly. Perfectly aligned endjoints for many boards, like we would have here, would make this clearly nothing but a better looking patch.

The Weave

In order to solve the problem of the better looking patch allow me to introduce you to what those in the hardwood flooring business refer to as the weave.

Removal of the plywood patch

When repairing a hardwood floor, the weave is used to seamlessly blend the new and existing floors. Modifications to the new hardwood may need to be made to match the width and depth of the existing floor.

We're getting there!

In the next steps the newly laid hardwood will receive a rough sanding to even it out with the existing floor.
